The importance of electrical equipment and appliance testing in the workplace
If you are a business, employer or any other person conducting a business you have the primary duty under the WHS Act to make sure that electrical equipment is regularly inspected and tested.
Your duty as a business requires eliminating electrical risks, or if that is not reasonably practicable minimising the risks so far as reasonable practicable.
Electrical risks are risks of death, illness, damage of property.
Electric shocks from faulty electrical equipment may also lead to related injuries, including falls from ladders or other elevated work platforms. Other injuries or illness may include muscle spasms, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, collapse and unconsciousness.
Minimise the risks
Insurance companies look favourably on business’s that regularly have their electrical equipment and appliances safety inspected and tested.
Also as an example training organisations that place apprentices in work places such as a mechanics workshop require that the workplace be safety inspected prior to the new apprentice starting work.
Regulatory government bodies also regularly check that electrical testing requirements are being met in the workplace.
